Discovering the Estate

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to visit Mashomack, a remarkable estate nestled in the countryside of Pine Plains, New York. Although I had seen photographs of the property before, experiencing it in person was something entirely different. Every corner of the estate revealed a quiet elegance, where historic architecture blends seamlessly with rolling lawns, mature trees, and a peaceful lakeside setting.

As a photographer, I often visit venues before a wedding to understand how the light changes throughout the day and to discover locations that lend themselves naturally to storytelling. Mashomack immediately impressed me with its timeless character and the sense of calm that surrounds the entire property.

The beautifully restored main house immediately establishes the character of Mashomack. Its classic architecture, welcoming entrance, and meticulously maintained gardens create a refined yet inviting first impression. Rather than feeling formal or imposing, the estate has an understated elegance that complements the surrounding landscape.

By visiting Mashomack before the wedding, I was able to understand how the light, landscape, and flow of the estate would allow me to work more quietly and anticipate meaningful moments without interrupting the celebration.

Light-Filled Interiors

Stepping inside, I was immediately drawn to the abundance of natural light. Large windows blur the boundary between the interior and the surrounding gardens, allowing every room to feel connected to the landscape. Leaving the house, my attention quickly shifted to the grounds. One of my favorite moments during the visit was discovering this simple bench overlooking the lake. It perfectly captures the atmosphere of Mashomack—peaceful, secluded, and timeless. It’s easy to imagine guests stepping away for a quiet conversation or simply enjoying the view.

The lake itself is one of the defining features of the estate. Reflections on the water, open lawns, and mature trees create countless opportunities for photography while preserving a sense of serenity that is increasingly rare.

The expansive views across the lake showcase the natural beauty that surrounds Mashomack. Every direction offers a different perspective, making the landscape feel both intimate and expansive.

Visiting Mashomack reinforced why I enjoy photographing weddings in the Hudson Valley. Beautiful venues certainly matter, but what excites me most is how places like this become part of a couple’s story. That is one of the reasons I enjoyed photographing this Jewish wedding.

Those unscripted interactions often become the photographs that couples treasure most years later.

The surrounding countryside also provides wonderful opportunities for portraits without taking the couple away from their celebration for long. A short walk is enough to find quiet corners, open fields, and beautiful natural light that complement the landscape without feeling staged. My goal is never to interrupt the rhythm of the celebration for photographs. Instead, I look for moments when the landscape, the light, and the couple naturally come together, creating portraits that still feel like part of the wedding day rather than a pause from it.

As the evening approached, the atmosphere changed once again. The soft light over the fields, the energy of the dancing, and the joy shared between family and friends created a beautiful ending to a memorable celebration. These transitions—from the quiet anticipation before the ceremony to the lively reception—are what make every wedding unique.
