The International Day of Holocaust Remembrance is more than a commemoration of history. It is a commitment to remember those who were lost, honor the survivors, and preserve their stories for future generations.
Each year, this gathering brings together religious leaders, scholars, public officials, and members of the community to reflect on the enduring consequences of the Holocaust and the responsibility we share in ensuring that its lessons are never forgotten.
I was invited to photograph this year’s commemoration, where the keynote address by Dr. Spyros Orfanos explored “A Holocaust Legacy: Transgenerational Transmission of Trauma.” His presentation examined how the experiences of the Holocaust continue to shape families across generations, reminding us that history leaves lasting marks long after the events themselves have passed.
Photographing an event of remembrance requires a different approach than documenting a celebration. The goal is not simply to record speakers and attendees, but to preserve the atmosphere of reflection, respect, and shared remembrance. Quiet expressions, attentive audiences, and moments of contemplation often communicate the significance of the gathering more powerfully than words alone.
